I am having trouble cold starting.
She cranks fine but takes a long time to fire up.
Once running it runs great and I have no problem with warm start.
The plugs are clean, good fuel.
Any suggestions?
Also, I launch at a shallow ramp that requires me to start with the engine tilted up a bit. Once running I have to tilt down very slowly (in incrementes) or it will start to smaoke badly, run rough and stall.
Any ideas?

Re: 1988 Dt 140

Hi Steve and welcome!
I have a 88 DT 115 and it doesn't like the cold starts either.
Are you using the choke, by pushing the key switch in while cranking?
Mine will have no problem starting when warm.
Actually mine has no problem starting when cold just likes to stall after 10 seconds of cold idling takes about five to six starts before it will idle.

Yeah I use the choke.
It gets kind of frustrating when it gets close to starting. The starter disengages and it takes quite a few times to fire up. But once she's running she runs like a new motor.
Now and then on warm start she'll stall but it is periodic and doesn't do it enough to cause a concern.
Finding service in my area is a pain but I love the motor.
I have it on an 18ft aluminum CC and she flys.
I fogged her last night and the plugs after a long season were spotless. A light coat of oil on them. I was very happy! Year 3 with this motor without any problems other than this cold start issue.
Do you have problems when tilting down with smoke and rough idle for a minute after tilt down?
It seems to get a surge of oil or something. I have learned to avoid it by tilting down slowly.
I spoke with a mechanic and he told me that these motors did this even when new.
