First off you need to run that motor with the thermostats installed. If you haven't already done so replace the old ones. Or, just pull the old ones out and place them in a pan of boiling water. Watch and see if they open and close properly. It's not the most scientific procedure in the world but it will tell you only that they're working. To get really technical you should have a thermometer in the pan and only bring the water to the temp setting on the thermostat. :D

Does it pee?
How long has it been sound this? Was it ever running right?
Any more details/history?

Am I understanding that it will not run right even without the thermostats?
