I am having problems with my 1988 Dt85 I have rebuilt the carbs and put new fuel line in and new spark plugs along with the female ends on the fuel line. Now for the problem it will start great and run great for 15-18 min and then the motor will slow down to 2500-3000 rpms, if we let it sit for about 5-10 min it will start up and run again great at 5500 rpms. Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Re: 1988 DT85 ?

I don't know which year Suzuki started, but there is a rev limiter in the CDI that will slow the engine if the oil flow is low or (I think) if the engine overheats. Check your manual. You need to check to see if the oil screen is clogged with gelled oil or if the engine is overheating. You can buy a point and shoot infrared thermometer at Radio Shack for ~$50 to check the cylinder heads. The overtemp alarm starts at 237 F. and won't shut up till it cools back down to 194 F.

Re: 1988 DT85 ?

Well, I'm actually having the same problem with a pair of 1988 DT 200's. I also rebuilt all the carburators to cure a different problem and now the motors run fine for about 3-5 minutes and then one or both slows down just like yours. If I sit for a few minutes they run fine again for another 3-5 minutes. I don't get any water flow or oil alarms so I doubt it's an overheating or oil issue. I'm pretty sure in my case it's a fuel starvation problem, so I'm going to look over the fuel bulbs and fuel tank vent's to see if the problem might be there.

-Rob

Check to make sure the hood liner is not disintegrating.

I had a 50 that was in that condition and bits of it would get into the float bowls through the vents and foul the main jet(s). But only after running for a little while.

Cleaned carbs a few times but it always returned till I lost the foam liner.
