I have a 1988 Evenrude 88 hp on a pontoon boat. I was told by the previois owner that it was a gas hog. My experience so far seems that is true. I know that fuel comsuptions is widely varied depending on your use. Is their some type of chart that would indicated fuel comsuption based on throttle position? Also, is there anything I can do to improve fuel comsumption? Other than new plugs and carb adjustment?

Thanks,

Al

The best thing you can do is to make sure it has the right propeller.

The engine should be able to turn 5500 RPM with a moderate load. Any less and you are lugging it and pouring gas down the drain.

What is best way to check RPM?

With a tachometer. You can use an automotive inductive test tach. However, you'll have to find one that can read 11,000 RPM plus. Then half the reading. The reason being is that is a 2 stroke engine and fires every time the piston goes to TDC.
