1988 Evinrude 25hp lower unit shift rod problem

I think I may have screwed something up this morning. I'm not a very good mechanic but have changed 2 other water pumps before. 10hp evinrude and 15 hp yamaha. so i decided i could change my 25hp with no problem. after putting the lower unit back on, it (the shift lever) wont go into reverse, also now forward(on the lever) is neutral(in the lower unit) and neutral(on the lever) is reverse(on the lower unit). The shifter will not go into reverse. I had a little trouble getting the shift rod disconnected and may have tugged a bit excessively. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated because i am ready to go out boating and would like to go forward not just backwards!

remove inspection plate on lower unit, remove one bolt from the shift rod connector. make sure that both ends of the shift for are seated firmly in the connector, reolace the bolt and tighten.

The ends of the shift rod are round, and the bolt goes thru the bottom of the round part to hold it in the connector.

Sounds lke you didn't have it seated in the clamp and it pulled out.

You could check your shift rod and re-adjust it. Try loosing the clamp move the shifter and re-tighten.

If you pulled the screw from the skeg that is the shift dog pivot you gotta take it back apart, turn it upside-down and re-align the hole while playing with the shift rod.:redface:

make sure yor not at full throttle, shifting is limited above start speed.

Depending on what year engine I would agree that the shift rod connector half way up the lower unit has been badly connected (i.e. with shift in neutral screw it tight making sure the gear is actually in neutral)... Should be easy to correct. Just shift in gear (front) so that it is in neutral in current situation. Loosen the connector halfway through the inspection plate, shift back to neutral with shift lever and tighten connector again...

i hate feeling like an idiot but love when its that easy. thats all i had to do, put lever in neutral, make sure lower unit is in neutral and connect! thanks everybody! i got another question now but will make a new post-
