I have recently gotten an evinrude 25 outboard motor and boat from my uncle, (inherited it). I am trying to replace the water pump and can't seem to get the gearbox to drop. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but just can't get this thing to completely drop out. It comes down about 3/4 of an inch when I have the shift lever in reverse.

I think I have to remove the shift lever, but can't seem to figure out how to get it apart.

Any help??? please.

Remove the water pump screens. Disconnect the shift linkage using two wrenches. Slide the upper brass nut up the shift lever and remove the plastic keeper that is underneath the nut.

I'll take the screens off and remove it. I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks a million for the help.

How do you get the black keeper sleeve off of the shaft? I have an 1989 20 hp Johnson and I can't get the keeper sleeve off the shaft because the end of the shaft is flared out thicker than the sleeve. I tried using needlenose pliers to pry it down off the shaft. Didn't work.
