Bought it 4 weeks ago, it came with the boat I was wanting. Put a power pack in and it fired right up after new plugs installed. Put kits in carbs, clean as a whistle. VRO pump leaky, so I put in a regular fuel pump and did away with the vro pump. Did the link and sink, new fuel lines, new fuel line pump bulb. Starts and idles fine, and in the water, just past fast idle it falls all over itself. I can manually baby the carb linkage to get it to rev and once it "cleans out", it revs up. Drop it back to neutral for a minute and it will not take the throttle. With the motor off, and the control handle all the way on, the advance is against the stop and the throttle roller lines up with the lower (shorter) line on the cam. It revs just fine on muffs on land by just moving the carb linkage, in neutral. All 3 cylinders have 100 psi compression. Beyond me now. Seems like it's flooding out or the spark is behind. I'm at the end of my knowledge, wife keeps giving me that "I told you so" look. Any ideas?? HELP!

Taking it to a fella down the road that's been working on them for years. Gotta be something simple I'm missing. Report back today, with good news, I hope.

Re: 1988 evinrude 60hp wont rev up under load.

The guy fiddled with it, couldn't find anything wrong. Went out this morning to get new plugs. Lo and behold, had the wrong plugs in it. The guy I got the plugs from was at a Mercury dealer, I didn't know any better. Looked 'em up this morning and got the correct plugs. Got new gas, put in a can of Sea Foam, put in the plugs and it fired right up. Started out, it faltered for a little bit then took off like a scalded dog.
My question: Would the wrong plugs, and gapped at .040 (wrong plug) instead of .030 (correct plug), make the motor act like in my original post??????

Old fuel by itself will make it act up like that. I read somewhere that 30 days is strectching it for 2 stroke useage with ethanol. I Put seafoam in the gas I use for the small 2 strokes I use around the house, and I can tell a difference in their starting properties after a month or so.

Yep, I understand about the gas, just wondering what the wrong plugs at the wrong gap would do. Thanks for the reply.
