Okay so here's the deal. We bought a motor that had been sitting for three years. when the key was turned, nothing would happened. hooked up a new wire from solonoid to starter, and put some new battery terminals on and boom, it wanted to start, wanted to turn over, but wouldn't. pulled the carbs off and sprayed them, tried and tried and tried to start but wouldn't quite yet. opened choke on motor and sprayed clearner in there and then it started. had it sitting in our driveway for about 3 weeks, starting it frequently and it would fire right up and we could leave it sit for 5-10 minutes idle and it wouldn't die or stop.

take it out on the water today, turned the key, fired up. we were cruisin for about 5-8 minutes and all of a sudden it turned off. it started doing the same thing; turned the key and it would try to start but wouldn't turn over. took the cap off and sprayed cleaner in carbs, and it would start but wouldn't stay started.

any advice? i'd appreciate it!

Did you disassemble the carb when you had it off? Did you firm up the primer bulb when trying to start?

Sounds like all the symptoms of not getting enough fuel. Start with the easy stuff sure like clogged filter, kinked hoses, loose fitting on fuel line sucking air, etc. Will the bulb on the fuel line get hard when you pump it up. Have someone pump the bulb on the water while running and see if it quits then. So far you will need no tools or spend any money.

QUIT spraying carb cleaner in it to make it run. 2 stroke engines are not designed to run on carb cleaner. Keep it up and you will be spending lots of money.

Next step is to install a tee and pressure gauge(0-15psi) in the fuel line and check pressure. Any reading above 3 or so will eliminate the fuel pump and point to carb problems.
