1988 Force 125 question

Just bought a Bayliner Bass Trophy w/ 125 Force. From the model number it is a 1988 motor and a "C" model. First question is I found a Force manual but its for "A Model". Will a "a" model manual work for my "C" model motor? NEXT: I bought the ear muffs today and when I got home hooked everything up and in about 2 mins. got the boat started and sounds good. But, the "pee hole" on the back wasnt putting out very much water at all. I put it in REV. and then FRW again and then NO MORE water out of pee hole so I shut motor off so it wouldnt get hot. If I need a impeller/water pump I assume a dealer should be able to get it even though its a older motor right? I am new at this and this is my first boat so any help would be very helpful. ALSO some told me about replacing the gear oil and the there are 2 screws on bottom and one is NO TOUCH as it would mess up everything. He posted 2 photos showing me the bottom holes. My problem with this is that my motor doesnt have 2 screws on bottom. It has 2 on the top (1) VENT and (2) FILL and only one screw on bottom..... THANKS for any help you can give me

THANKS... I saw the 3 photos in that post and I am going to ad that to my motor. SO, this is going to be REAL STUPID but I gotta ask... in one of the photos if you look on rear of motor there are 2 holes which I thought were PEE HOLES or Tell Holes... If NOT just what are they and what do they do... Guess you can tell this is my first boat... LOL

Under way, most exhaust and coolant water exits at the prop. Sitting at idle, water pressure from the body of water you're sitting in forces the exhaust and coolant out the pressure relief ports. (two holes)

OK, thanks for the answer.. Being new and my first boat I just didnt want the motor to run HOT and mess the motor up. Once I started the boat it sounds real good and thought there shound be a "telltale" spray. Being I dont have one on this motor from FAC. (I will ad one myself) is there anything I need to do or check to make sure the motor is not going to or running hot sitting idle with the muffs on. ALSO: if a service manual has "A MODEL" on it and I have a "C MODEL" is there much Diff. between the 2 motors ???

You might want to replace the thermostat. They rarly go bad, but at under 30 bucks, it is an easy job. It is located above the spark plugs. It is a little black square box with four screws. See pic below

Hope this helps,
Tom

Oh, and the gear oil holes. Mine too has "fill" and "vent" and the top and a single hole at the bottom. Take out the bottom first, then the vent screw. After all the oil is out, take out the fill screw and replace the bottom screw. Then refill it with( i like Quicksilver synthic)gear oil. Refill througt the "fill" hole until oil comes out the vent hole. Give an extra pump to besure all the air is out. It will take 1 whole quart to fill it. So make sure you have an extra one on hand.

Since the engine blocks, midlegs and lower units were essentially the same with only minor changes, the "C" manual will give you any info you need for just about any repair needed.

On muffs, it can sometimes be very difficult to prime the water pump and not much water will exit the idle relief holes. You MUST use a LOT of pressure and water must be squirting out around the muffs freely in order to get sufficient water. YES! Water must exit them at all times. Most of the times on muffs it will exit as a fine spray and most will exit the exhaust snout. If NO water is exiting the idle relief holes you MUST ASSUME that no water is getting to the top of the block.

Look closely at the back of the engine in this photo and you will see the steady stream of water exiting the idle relief on my 50. If you click multiple times you can get a large copy that will almost fill the screen.

When you change the lower unit oil. do it with the engine vertical. After filling, let sit for 1/2 hour to let air bubbles rise, then top off and replace the plugs.

Only if he has a dual exhaust lower unit. If it has a single exhaust (like my '87 and '88 85HP motors do), water (and exhaust) come out of the exhaust snout, not the prop hub.

There are 2 holes on the back of the motor and above the holes is a decal that say "power flow". When I started the boat it did show signs exhaust smoke and very little water. I dont know how to post a photo here or I would post one of my motor.

If I asked where is the exhaust snout, What would be the answer? Hub? Oh, never mind. Merry Christmas. Good Luck Thames_Outdoors

The exhaust snout is on the underside of the cavitation plate, and also acts as the trim tab.

Re: 1988 Force 125 question

Thames,

The two holes are your water outlet. The most critical thing to understand is that you will 99% of the time overheat with this motor on muffs. Drop it in the lake and run it before changing a bunch of stuff out.

My motor 1989 125 powerhead on a 1990 120 motor (long story) runs for about 2 minutes on muffs and overheats with barely a trickle of water coming out of the water holes. Get it in the lake and a stream shoots out 2 feet at idle and on full throttle about 4-5 feet.

Theres lots of posts on this just browse around.

Re: 1988 Force 125 question

I am new at this and never owned a boat before. My dad had a hydrosport yrs ago and thats the only time I have been around this type of boat. Got the motor manual ordered which will help me. My dad and mom loved to fish but I lost my father 3 yrs ago and my mother misses going fishing. So, I got a good deal on this boat so I figured I need to make sure it is running right and then I can get my mother back out to do some fishing. I have some minor work to do on the inside but so far everything seems to be in good shape.
