I was bringing in my 1988 Force 125 in off the lake when it felt like it went into nuetral, so I immediately shut it down. I was getting no response from my prop even though the engine sounded fine. We did not feel as if we hit anything either. Unfortunately, we had to be towed in.

I have taken my boat to the local dealer and he says we sheared off the vertical shaft. The dealer said is was from an extreme force that caused it. Basically, they said we needed a complete lower unit that would cost about $3,000.

I have two questions:
1) Can I buy just a vertical shaft and put it on or am I going to have to buy the whole lower unit?
They said if was one piece and the vertical shaft couldn't be replaced.
2) What could have caused the shaft to break? I am told it had to have been something we hit, although we did not feel a thing before it went. There were seven of us on the boat at the time coming in off of a local lake.

Thank you, Brad
