I was just wandering what is the correct oil for the gearcase in this engine? I want to change it because I just got this boat and would rather be safe than sorry since I dont know when it was last changed. I already know there is no water in there.

hi robert,

... well take a close look at the oil as it dumps out to be certain.

the oil you want is API GL5 SAE 80 or 90 weight and is available at most Wal-Marts or your local marine dealer. The job should only take 10-20 minutes. This oil is often referred to as ?Hi Vis?.

Make sure you buy Marine gearcase oil at Wally world. Do not use that made for cars as the chemical makeup is different.

Got the oil changed. Being an auto mechanic I would never put auto gearcase oil in a boat. However, I have always wandered if the marine gearcase oil wouldnt be better in an auto than the auto gearcase oil. Seems like it would be.

Very little water in the gearcase, probably from condensation. I still keep haveing bubbles come out though. I filled the case and then waited about 15 minutes. Added more, waited, added more. I filled the case 2 days ago but I just went out again to be sure it was full and still got bubbles. Am I doing something wrong or is it impossible to get all the bubbles out? I am filling thru the fill hole until it comes out the vent hole.

Robert,

Most of us fill the gearcase from the drain hole as it gets less air in it that way. The best way to do it is to buy a large container and the Quicksilver pump. You pump it in from the bottom until it comes out the vent plug hole and then put the fill and vent plugs in before pulling out the pump nozzle.

I can usually get the screw into the bottom hole before a teaspoon amount of fluid leaks out.

Now you know how to do it for the next time.
