Boat repair shop said either stater, triger,CD Module or all three could be the problem. Is there anyway to test to see which of the three should I try first. I think I can pick used parts up to replace these, but wondering what should be my first step.

khelmick , Depending on which model 88' 50 hp force you have ,try swapping the CD coils or just coils on other models and see if your no spark cylinder moves.A specific model number would be helpful in assisting your problem.

It is model #5078XD. Is checking both coils the first step in the process of elimination. If I need to replace the stator or triger, how easy is it to remove the flywheel? Do I need a special tool?

khelmic,Model 5078XD has a single CD pack and two ignition coils. Before proceding with optional possibilities lets attack problem one component at a time.Swap CD leads on coils and see if non firing cylinder moves while cranking. If so it is likely the Cd unit.If no change, return the CD leads back to their original coil, swap coils and crank test for spark. If problem moves it is likely a bad coil.

I pulled the wire off of the working cylender plug and put it on the nonworking cylender plug. The (non working cylender only) tried to fire actually a loud backfire, but it did have spark. Any suggestions on my next step? Try a new coil? Switch coils around? New Cd Module? Stator? Trigger?

Crossing plug wires like that can damage something when you get the backfire. Take a look here for some help: Web Page

Khelmic, I'm sure the backfire is a result of the cylinder not firing before and having uncombusted fuel in it.The CD pack doesn't care which identical coil it is discharging its signal voltage to for test purposes.

ob, will that uncumbusted fuel eventually clear out? I'm assuming it's not good for the cylender to have those backfires.

Should I, or can I switch Coil packs, to see if a bad coil is my problem?

Sure ,You can swap the coils and retest.Rather than backfiring the cylinders during crank testing a spark tester would be advisable. What you would like to determine is :
#1-Is one of the coils not firing
#2-Is one of the signal wires from CD not making to coil

The Clymer Manual goes into detail of how to diagnose each component. You'll need a volt meter capable of reading 600VAC. Instead of going by the values in the book, which are given as "DVA", use a standard meter set to the AC auto-range, If you get a reading that is ballpark, you can scratch that component off the replacement list.
To list the entire procedure here would activate my carpal into tunneling, as it is 4 seperate pages of typing outta the book.
Another good argument for the purchase of a manual,is even after it has saved you buying stuff you don't need, it can tell you how to keep your engine frosty, and in reliable condition.
