Hello,

I recently purchased a 1988 Force 50HP motor. The previous owner had never experienced any oil leaks, but just before he sold it to me he replaced the lower unit oil. When the engine is in the down position, it does not leak oil. If the engine is left in the tilt positon for traveling, I am getting lower unit oil coming out right at the back of the motor where the lower unit and upper unit come together. Based on a thread posted by danpa1 on 3/35/07, I think we may have the same problem. It appears that there may be a seal that needs to be replaced. Also, it appears the oil is not the gas/oil mix type, but rather lower unit oil. Based on the other thread is it possible he simply overfilled the lower unit and it is pushing through the seal. Any ideas you all my have is much appreciated. Thanks. Jim

It's difficult to significantly overfill without really trying hard. With the motor vertical, remove the upper plug. That's the oil level. The seals are pushing 20 years old. It would not be at all unlikely that they are worn out or cracked with age.

Could be the shift rod seal if it only happens when tilted. Shift rod seal is in the front where the oil would go when tilted.

My problem was a leak coming from the water intakes when the motor was straight up and down. It was the drive shaft upper seal. It had been damaged when the lower unit was taken apart to replace the waterpump kit. Yours sounds like a different problem. I would just get a seal kit and replace all of the seals in the lower unit at once. Saves having to break it down too often. Everytime I fix one thing on mine, it makes something else quit working right.
