Is Galaxy like Bayliner? considered to be crappy boat?
I am in the middle of a dilema here and would greatly appreciate feedback from experts.
This Galaxy is my first boat that I obtained last season. Despite minor repairs throughout the season I had a lot of fun with this boat.
The old owner didn't seem to care much about the look of the boat but kept the engine in a very good shape.
I got it back in June 2002 and wanted to enjoy it before I get my hands on cosmetic work.

Now, I am getting this boat prepared for the new paint job. I had sanded entire hull, filled all scratches and chips and it is now ready to be primered. I replaced worn upholstery making it all nice gray color.
I need to know to decide how much to invest in it. Paint job was a must, regardless whether I keep it or sell it.

It needs new floor but is still ok to use this season. Needs a mooring cover that I will only custom order if I decide to keep the boat.

Bottom line is - is Galaxy worth making look beautifull and keep for myself or is it time to sell it and upgrade?

Thanks in advance,
Lenny

Lenny - Worry not who made it or what reputation it may have - if you are havin fun - - have fun with it. A paint job is relatively cheap and will add greatly to the value when you go to sell it.

I have made a small profit on nearly every boat I have owned in the past 30 years by cleanin & paintin. That allowed me to go from a 11' sailboat to a 28' cabin job with little of my own money. Some boats I didn't keep very long - one I kept for 15 years cause it did what I wanted a boat to do at that time - have fun.

If you have a mind to do that keep in mind that the best market for buyin & sellin in the North East is late spring & early summer from my experience. If you get out of that window you might as well keep the boat for the next season. Not many folks in Brooklyn will be looking to buy a boat in November.

Thanks SoLittle,
I value your opinion on this subject.

What worries me is that after I will fix this boat up it will still have low resale value because of "Galaxy" name.
I don't know much about Galaxy, other then the company is out of business.
Is Galaxy really bad boat builder?

In 1978 I purchased a new 19 foot Galaxy bowrider with a 170 HP I/O and a galvanized E-Z loader trailer.
I still own it, I still use it, I still like it.
Nuff said.

Re: 1988 Galaxy 16" (worth fixing or not)

My uncle bought a 1985 Galaxy 20' bow rider two years ago. I've spent alot of time out in that boat. When he got it all it needed was for water to be drained from the tank and it was ready. We had it out a handfull of times and the lower unit let go. After putting alot of money into it to get it that fixed we have had a year and a half of good boating. As in any cheapper boat it can not be beat on like a grady or a whaler with out messing it up. If you take care of the boat the boat will take care of you.

I don't know much about Galaxy myself, I don't see many other Galaxys on the water. It is kind of a "no name" boat in my book.

I don't know were you boat but every time I went outside of boston horbor in it I got beat, hard. They are lake boats. My 1975 11' Boston whaler takes choppy water better then the 20' Galaxy does. [no joke]

If you use it on a lake, bay or river you can have fun with it. I would not put a real lot on money into the boat because it is what it is no matter what you do to it. The boat is worth whatever it is worth to you.

Galaxy boats were made from 1972-1990. They were made in Columbia,SC. Iv worked on several of them and think personally they were built pretty well. My dad has a 1984 model that he bought new. It really depends on how well it was maintained.

Thanks a lot all.
I will make this Galaxy of mine look better then the way I got it. Not sure what I will do with it after. Might enjoy it for a while and sell it in the beginning of next season.
I noticed a bit of uncomfortability in choppy waters but was not sure if it's me or the boat, or my wife who's not a good swimmer :)

NY Jamaica Bay, Sheepshead Bay is my area.

Ryan,
I think Trent is right about Galaxy being out of business since 1990.
The 92 Galaxy you see on Ebay was made by a company called Global who took over Galaxy. Hello.. in regards to your question of boat value, I am not sure what the resale value is of your boat. I just purchased a 20' 1987 Galaxy Admiral. It was kept in very good condition. I refinished the teak wood trim which brings the boat to looking like new. I have owned 3 other boats, older & newer over the yrs. In my opinion this one is very well made and has a lot of disctinction & class many boats lack. I chose this boat because it is roomy, easy to trailer, came with a galvanized, oversize Shore Lander trailer. The boat manueavers well, takes the waves and rough water very well and has all ther room we need for fishing or cruising. With a Mercury cruiser 175 hp inborard it has more power than needed even in rough water. I am using it on a large lake near our home. Feel free to e-mail me for more info, Ed Tacey. tacey802@charter.net (tacey802 Yahoo messenger)

These are my 75 Galaxy 15' tri-hull after redoing it. It was great therapy rebuilding it, and has been awesome enjoyment since. :)

With a boat that old, the name means less than the condition, age, and size, for resale. I think you will find that most older 16 footers sell for somewhere around the same price unless exceptionally well maintained or in **** poor condition.

I also suspect that in your area, 16 footers are not too desireable simply because the water you boat on needs something a little bigger. And yes, I know. This Bronx boy circumnavigated Manhattan (East River was nasty--worse than Hells Gate and the ferry captains don't give a damn about right of way--they will run you down.) in a 15 footer and also ran part of Long Island (Lungiland) sound in one. also ran that boat up the Hudson into Canada.

SO: Right now, the boat is probably worth all it will ever be even if you put money into it. If you really like the boat and intend to keep it for more than a few years, then invest--otherwise----?
