I think there is a missing part between the pull coil and where the rope passes through the hole to the pull handle.
I can't find the part or a diagram. The rope is being shredded after about 20 pulls

Well....I am not finding a part called eyelet

#19 in the parts diagram ......... but ITYWF now "unavaialble". You will have to improvise unless you can find one on ashelf somewhere

iBoats dont seem to list them but another marine engine parts supplier we all know has 2 in stock at $18

thank you.............I guess it could be the eyelet because it is not perfectly round. It has a little worn notch in one side. Any ideas on how to take it out and put the other in?

Is there supposed to be a part at the end of the screw driver?

Your picture is not clear.-----And I do not know what you are pointing at.-----Or if the parts on your 88 model are in fact an 88 model.-----Early motors did have an interlock from throttle to the recoil mounted there.!!-----Post a few more pictures of your recoil and motor about 10 pictures will help determine what you have here.----May not even be a 1988 model !

ok, I will get more pictures tomorrow. Right now I have to take my wife out to dinner.
There is a serial # 6291502.
There could be parts from different years on it. I bought it from a young mechanic a year or so ago. It runs really great. I have rebuilt carb, fuel pump, and some other things on it.

Last year it only wanted to run on one cylinder. Joe Reeves suggested the low speed needle was backed off too many turns. I had only backed it off 1 1/2 turns. He was right. When I backed it off only one turn both cylinders worked.

It looks like a manifold off an earlier model . That is where the starter inter lock pawl would hve been.

The recoil looks older too as racerone suggests,

Possibly older than the ID plate or a "bitsa"

The eyelets are usually a problem on the older 9.5 have not seen it much on the later 80's 9.9/15...Proper pull cord with tight hard weave makes all the difference. In general why not pressure wash that dirty ol' dog, makes huge difference on easy clean work space and less mistakes.

if the eyelet is worn out and you cannot find a replacement you may be able to make one from a short piece of copper pipe with one end flanged out

remove any burs from the other end and glue it in place with JB weld

as per above… cheap nylon rope won't do get the good stuff of the proper diameter for your motor

your local lawn mower shop or Bike shop should be able to sell you 5-6 feet for 2-3$

btw is that tape wrapped around the carb cam roller

I did order a new eyelet yesterday. Gonna call and ask if they have any idea of how to take the old one out and put the new one in.

I have used Johnson pull cords and had the same result.

Yes, I also ordered a new cam roller.

I am removing that bracket today as it doesn't appear to be of any use.

And, I am going to pressure wash today.

Thanks for all the responses.

If you split the old one with a wee file it will likely fall out !!
