I just got done cleaning my carbs used a rebuild kit with all new gauskets etc...carbs were clean when I took them apart and running fine just wated to make sure the seals were okay. Anyway when I put it in the water after the carb rebuild the motor wont idle without a little rpm rev and when I put the choke down and put it into gear it just dies unless i do it really fast and give it RPMS immidiatly(but the motor runs fine once it is in gear and underway will run WOT and very responsive). My question is, is there some kind of tuning screw on the carbs that i might have moved? I tried not to mess with anything besides cleaning the insides of the carbs and replacing the seals i have done it before to my other motor and did not have this problem. any input will help..thank you.

Re: 1988 Johnson 88 SPL dies at idle

Check to make sure the idle is not set too low. That engine should idle between 650 and 750 rpm, set when the boat is floating normally in the lake, and it is in forward gear. If it's too low, it can't sustain itself when it goes into gear. Also possible there is still some dried fuel in the idle passages of the carbs. When that engine idles, the carb butterflys are closed. That means the fuel must pass thru special idle passages (only.) if there is any dried fuel in them, that will cause a restriction (lean condition) and the engine may not idle well and you may even get a lean sneeze at idle. Once you crack the throttle even a little, the other jets will flow fuel and the engine should run fine-sounds like it's ok once off idle.....
