I bought a 1988 Johnson 90 HP with my boat last fall. It runs great and I'm very happy with it. It's been reconditioned and painted. They pained the sacrificial anode on the lower unit.

I don't store the boat in the water, it goes to the lake for the day and comes home to the driveway every evening. maybe it get's two straight weeks in the water during vacation once a year.

I think I have to remove the lower unit to replace it, so if I don't have to I don't want to.

Do you think I should replace the anode?

If it's the rectangular one just below the midsection, you just tilt the motor and remove the screw from underneath. It should be removed and cleaned periodically anyway to maintain connectivity. You can check it with an ohmmeter, but once it turns white it is not working.

You would have to remove the bearing carrier to get to the larger anode located there, so it is especially important to service the small one.

The anode should not be painted !!!!!

Zinc anodes become passivated in fresh water so should be cleaned off periodically (Ideally magnesium anodes should be used in fresh water, aluminium in brackish or salt water and zinc reserved for salt water only)

However in fresh water and not kept afloat either its very doubtful if you really need an anode anyway.
Go back a few years and you wont find anodes on outboards.
