1988 Johnson Outboards 15 [ J15RCCS ]

Just read Leroys' Ramblings. He states the '88 carb has a plastic top. By the pictures he posted I have an '87 carb. I ordered the carb kit for the '88 and I got the carb kit for the '87. Which I guess is ok. Comes with the correct gasket.

After the first kit motor ran great wot and idle.

I let motor sit for a month and that's when I was hit with this wot issue.

The motor would idle all day, no problems. Motor would run great up until I wanted to go faster than @ 8-10 mph. Then it would sputter. I found if I pumped the primer it would open up to wot and run pretty well.

So, I bought a NEW fuel pump. Same issue.

So, I rebuilt the carb again and I bought a new gas tank. In a tank of water motor the seems like it will run great at wot, but it won't idle. This is the second time I have put in a kit. After the first kit motor ran great wot and idle. I let motor sit for a month and that's when I was hit with this wot issue.

I only use marine gas and I did run the gas out of motor before letting it sit for that month.

Do you think it is fuel pump ( which is new ) or carb?

YAY!!! I discovered why motor wouldn't idle. The top welch plug came out. I thought I tapped it in pretty well. But, I didn't.
It's in there now and idling like it should.

Any ideas about the carb being an '87 (metal) and not the (88) plastic top.

I'm glad it is the metal top and bottom pan. I just don't understand how I ordered the part for the '88 and I get the '87.

But, I should be glad, right?

Now, I got to get it on the water and see if she will open up!

You probably have an early build 88 motor. OMC used up there stock of metal bodied carbs before making the switch. The same carb kit fits 1973-92 motors you did not get the wrong kit. There is only one kit that fits all the different styles of carbs for the 13 cid block.
