1988 Mariner 150 Starting/Idle Issues - Lots of Details Inside

Hi folks,

I have a 1988 Mariner 150 V6, S/N 0B251514. It has been a cantankerous motor while I've had it. I had issues last year with it dying at idle and bogging while trying to accelerate, so over the offseason I had the fuel system rebuilt: All carbs removed and cleaned with new gaskets, all new fuel lines and primer bulb, new fuel filter, new fuel pump diaphragm. Compression test returned good on all cylinders. It does run better now but still similar issues, namely:

-Difficult to start at first (needs lots of cranking, fast idle opened)
-Dies when shifted into gear, especially reverse, unless 1/4 or more throttle applied
-Idles OK, but dies occasionally if fast idle is not applied

When in gear and moving, it runs like a champ all the way to WOT and does not bog.

I need to fix the idle in gear problem because it makes docking, launching, and retrieving a difficult and dangerous task. I want to be able to pop it in gear and have low speed control. Any ideas? I have read up some on "link and sync" for the carbs, I don't know if this has been done.

A related issue - I accidentally hooked up my battery backwards and stupidly tried to turn it over. I know my rectifier is fried and I will be replacing it, but could my stator be damaged? With the engine in gear on the muffs, the upper gear on the stator does not raise to engage with the flywheel (or is that the high speed circuit?) I have spark on all 6 cylinders and my plugs look good, a little oily but otherwise fine.

One other thing - it is oil injected and I filled my remote tank up before the season, but I noticed after this past weekend that the top tank is very low. My connections are all good. I don't remember if I filled the top tank or not; does it need to be full for the oil pump system to work, or should I look at replacing the oil pump as well? EDIT: Solved this one, upon closer inspection there was a crack in my air line to the remote tank.

Thanks for your help!
