I'm working on restoring my first boat. It's an 88 Maxum 1700 with a 3.0 merc.

Here is how it looked when I baught it. The motor was freshly rebuilt by a local shop and everything works. I basically paid for the motor.

I knew I was going to have to deal with some soft spots and redo some upolstery. The boat basically sat for the last two years as the PO has MS and it was collecting moisture.

Before taking it home we put it in the water and it ran quite nice.

After reading a lot of stuff here and watching friscoboaters YouTube videos I came to terms with the fact that patching some holes probably wasn't a great idea. So I stripped the interior out and took it to a shop to get the floor and stringers redone. I knew I wouldn't have time to do all that myself, he can do it in a couple weeks for $1600 and to me that's a fair deal.

Great deal if he does it right. Hows about the transom? Did he look at that?

Na..That will drop when its all torn up..for another measly 6k and a spare stepchild he can get that done too ;)

Thats an excellent price. Especially for this time of year and including materials too boot.

I checked the transom, it seems solid. The shop was recommended by a few people locally and he agreed to let me check in on progress so hopefully the work is good. Either way I don't have time to do it. I have a window of a couple more weeks before things get too busy for me to spend much time if any on personal projects.

On this boat the transom doesn't go to the floor. It looks like it is just a a piece that surrounds where the leg attaches about 8-10" around the hole. I don't have a pic but does this sound right?

I believe that is right. I think your boat is similar to a Bayliner 1750. Same transom design. Check out my rebuild it shows the transom apart. Good luck.

The mobile site isn't loading pictures so I'm gonna try and use photobucket to post up some of the interior recovering pics.

Gutted the interior out,

Stripped out the foam from the old seats etc.

Old vinyl and wood was shot, foam was good. I don't really have any pics of the new wood and its pretty self explanatory anyhow, take the old wood trace it on new and cut it out... I was able to reuse the foam from everything except the backs of the jump seats and the side panels, I used 1" for the side panels and 2" for the seat backs.

The original side panels were not with the boat, the PO had done some nasty lookin stuff I'm not gonna show you. Dad and I made these which will look miles better and fit speakers. Actually in the picture you can see what the PO used to replace the side panels. I was looking at putting both speakers in the side panels but I rethought that idea....

I liked the original speaker location under the rear jump seats but the holes were all chewed up and one side had floatation in it so I nixed that location. I had to build a new lower doghouse anyhow as the other one was pretty badly dry rotted so I made the lower doghouse a little bigger and added enclosed speaker boxes. As you can see I used a lot of PL Premium, thats so it doesn't fall apart...

You can't see it but I made the lower doghouse so that the bottom sits about 1/4" off the deck so that any water that now gets into the boat will just run to the bilge.

On the back I wired in a trailer 4 pin connector so I can remove the doghouse for servicing the engine without any wires causing me to rage.

I installed the front speakers in the original location I had selected in the side panels. There are the new side panels, covered and with speaker installed. They look so purdy.

Here is what the new rear jump seat backs will look like..

I didn't sew any of this stuff Just worked the corners and staples the ($*& out of them. I went through about 3000 staples but the interior pieces are all done. I'll get some pictures of it all once its in the boat, its all piled in the spare room right now.

The back to back seats were shot so I just tossed them. The original seat boxes are gone the way of the dodo anyhow with the floor being ripped out. I picked up a set of wise seats online for $200 in pretty stellar shape. They look like these.

Next I gotta clean up the upper doghouse.

The upper doghouse was cracked at the bottom lip on both sides from people sitting on it, I riveted some alumin plates to shore them up with a lot of rivets. Now it should support my fat ass.

I got some colour matches paint that should match the vinyl upholstery and painted the upper doghouse last night. It looks a lot better. Probably put 8 coats on it with an extra few on the areas of high wear. Hopefully it stands up well.

Here it is back together. The colour is killer in the sun. Probably gonna be hard to keep clean but who cares... You can see the rivets but o ce the jump seats are in I doubt they will be noticeable.

Floor is out.

It's a some design with two shallow stringers and no factory bulkheads. The framing you see ahead of the gas tank is from the PO patching in around the old ski locker. Stringers actually look decent. Yesterday I ground off all the old carpet glue. There was factory foam on the outside of the stringers that was completely saturated.

No pics today. I talked to the shop and they comfirmed the stringers are in good shape, I'm going to head down tomorrow morning to check for myself but all things being good I could have it back together over the weekend.

I looked at the boat yesterday. They had just finished spraying gelcoat, it looked pretty slick. I'll post up some interior pics this weekend.

Yesterday I cut a bunch of Z clips for mounting the new jump seat backs.

Just curious, why didn't you check the stringers and bulkheads after you had them exposed?

We did. They were solid. I think the bulk of the water that was in there came from exposure this spring when the boat was stored outside. The floor rot was mostly from shotty repairs done by the PO where the fiberglass didn't have any clear coat allowing water to get in.

Not much visual to report. I had the engine tuned up and it purrs like a kitten. Yesterday I replaced the bilge pump and added a second blower so now I have one blower pushing air in and another pushing it out.

I started removing the old factory pin striping which is a huge PITA. I'm going to the autobody shop today to pickup up an eraser wheel and try it out. I'll post pics of my progress once I start making some...

Boat goes on its first real voyage this weekend, I'm gonna drag it out to the lake.
