I have a 1988 Mercruiser 165 that is giving me fits. It is very difficult to start and once I get it started it will stall when shifting into forward or reverse. As well as sometimes when I shift to neutral. I have replaced the plugs, rotary button and Dist. Cap. When attempting to start the engine sounds great but it will not start. I am at a loss. I cannot figure out what is going on. Also, can anyone tell me the RPM specs at idle and while in gear?

Is the choke operating properly? What are your current RPM's in gear/nuetral?

I would agree check your choke. If the RPMS are running low turn the idle screw up a bit but not to much, You do not want to grind it in grear.<br />Good Luck!

I sugest checking your points that engine should start right up. I changed to electronic points. Its easy to change and you dont have to worry after that. Check your timing also it is prob off I dont even use my choke I have it wired open and get better gas mileage. But I live in a warm climate. Your shifting problems are prob your netural safety switch check that. If your linkage is not adjusted p erfectly that will happen it did for me atleast You should have a manual and read up on it

The shift interupter switch may need adjustment along with the idle. When you shift from neutral into gear a micro switch kills the ignition for a moment allowing for a smoother shift with less impact on the drive.
