I need some advice!!!! I have a 1988 OMC 3.0L and when I run it out of the water it runs like a champ, no misses, noises, no anything. But, once I put the boat in the water and go to take off, the boat just runs like crap, sput, stutters, backfires through carb. People are telling me I need a tune up others are telling me it is the interrupter switch, I need direction on where to go, can anyone tell me the firing order for the cylinders?

The interrupt switch will make the engine die/stall for a split second to facilitate engaging/disengaging the dog clutch in the upper half of the outdrive.

You need a tune-up. Go through all the diagnostics related to your carb and ignition system. Check plugs, wires, distributor cap, points, rotor, timing, accelerator pump, choke, float, needle and seat, etc. If you haven't done it in a few years, it needs a review.

After that, adjust your shift cables per the factory manual so you don't blow up your gearset or the clutch.

Bet you'll find the issue!
