I have a pair of 1988 OMC V4 Sea Drives that I want to check the timing. I have an OMC manual which tells me to set it at 28 degrees at (I think 4600 rpm) with a timing light and use a test wheel. I do not have access to a test wheel and the thought of hanging over the transom at night whipping down Biscayne Bay (near Miami Fl)- - shall we say is not my idea of fun - - nor would I consider it safe.

Is there a secret procedure known only to a few select true mechanics where I can do this some other way in my driveway - - that you could share??? I checked the Search for prior posts and could not find anything useful.

We do it at the ramp. Back the boat in far enough to let the motors pick up water. In gear, slowly run them up to WOT one at a time. With your crossflows look for 5500 minimum. You may have to adjust the trailer position to get the desired rpm.

Hook up your timing light and have someone slowly throttle up (in gear) while you watch the timing.

Good luck!
