boat damage 007.jpgboat damage 008.jpgBoat Damage 004.jpgBoat Damage 005.jpgBoat Damage 006.jpgI hit a rock directly on the front keel of my fiberglass boat this week at about 5 mph! The damage area is not large, 2" wide x 5" long, but it leaks. I have the boat tipped up to dry out the damaged spot.
10 years ago when I purchased this boat the floor was rotten. The foam was water saturated so I removed floor and foam and did some structural repairs. I removed all the foam except from the front in the cabin where the seats and floor were ok. The damaged area is now below that area and below the waterline.
Should I check for structural damage on the keel below the floor in the cabin, or do the repair to the fiberglass externally?

I would inspect the inside where the damage is.

Could you post up some pics for us please ..

Pictures uploaded - I ground out the damaged fiberglass and under it was broken glass and wood! Should I fill the void with something? What would be a good filler?
How far should I feather out the glass from the hole?

I still think you need to inspect the inside ( and post a pic of that perspective ).

I would say your grinding profile should extend/bevel out at least 5" more than what you have in your pics.

That wood thats shown is whats confusing me.

You really should get to the inside of the repair.

Do you have an overall pic of this boat ?

PS. Your rubrail insert looks like its coming out on the stbd side :) ..

Filled the void in the keel with evercoat kitty hair fiberglass body filler back to keel profile a little less then the thickness of the fiberglass hull. Now to grind out the tapered sides of the patch and do the glassing work.
Rubrail insert is ok
