1988 Suzuki 40. Starting problems!

I have a 1988 Zuki 40 hp. It has been sitting for about a year and a half. I have cleaned the carb several times and checked the fuel pump (she is pumping strong). The motor will not start unless I spray fuel into the carb. Once she is fired up it sounds really great and will idle and rev just fine. The comp is 120lbs and 115lbs. Any ideas as to the cause of this. Thanks for the advise.

Assuming you drained old fuel, have you checked plugs? Sounds like a fuel issue, even though you've cleaned carbs, after you spray fuel in carb, will it stay running with fuel from the tank?

Old fuel was drained and it does stay running and sounding strong after I spray fuel into the carb, but it will not start unless I spray the fuel into the carb. The plugs look fine, don't seem to be fouling.

Sounds like low speed jets/orafice, also idle screw. In the manual it will state how many turns to back them out. First you seat them gently then back them out, not sure for your motor.
