I just had carb rebuilt and took my 1989 starcraft with a 2.3 ford motor in it out to the lake. had it out for an hour probably before it back fired and never started again. now today it will try to start but won't run. Seems like it's chokin on gas also. I've put new plugs, wires, fuel filter and the carb kit and vacuum pump on carb. Could my coil have went out? I looked in the distributer and the points and rotor look clean. Any help would be appreciated. Been having some bad luck with this boat since i bought it last summer.

What shape is the timing belt in. Sure sounds like it jumped timing to me.

Timing belt looks good. Do you think the float could be stuck? seems like its choking on gas. still won't start but checked the plugs and got spark on all four.

"Could my coil have went out?" yes

If it backfired it either got ignition at the wrong time or the valves closed at the wrong time.
I suggest you check very closely the cam to crank timing, these engines can jump the belt and never cause or have any visible damage to the belt.

All being good in the cam timing then pull the distributor and check the drive gear and the drive gear pin

recheck the Ignition static timing if the distributor gear is ok cam to crankshaft and cam to distributor.
The only reason I stress recheck timing events is because I have seen very experienced mechanics miss time these engines by 1 notch on the timing belt.

Been there the gear on your distributor is chewed up most likely, pull the dist and report your findings, mark the dist in relation to the rotor and block
