I have a 1989 mariner outboard motor with tiller
this motor has never given me any problem up until yesterday,it always start with the first pull, but yesterday went out fishing everything was fine until it just quit completly on me on the lake, i tried and tried to start it but nothing, i change the plugs, check the fuel filter everything ok,i remove the plugs lot's of gas on them, but it seem there is no spark, this is the first time ever this has occured to this motor could it be the CDI box,or the coils,or is it under the flywheel at the magneto,if anyone had this problem could you please advise what to do or what to check for,i am not having good luck with outboard motor lately at all, thank's for your time and consideration for reading this
and will be waiting for a response from any marine technician out there.... Re: 1989 20 hp mariner

Biggest cause of 'no spark' I have seen on these motors is the stop switch in the end of the tiller handle gets wet and shorts out, causing the CDI box to think that the stop button has been pressed. Have you received any electric shocks from the tiller handle (usually but no always). Try disconnecting the wire that comes from the tiller and seeing if it'll start. Don't forget to reconnect the wire from the side mounted stop switch or the only way you'll be able to shut it down is to flood it with the primer

Re: 1989 20 hp mariner

i tried unplugging these wires but to no avail it
didn't start neither, know could it be the stater
or the trigger causing the problem, because i am
having no spark whatsoever, lot's of gas going to
the plugs,i change the CDI box and still the same
problem. the two coils are good, because change them and tried them on another motor and they work,so i guess it's must be these two parts left to change,so anyone with these problems please contact me.. thank you... bigtrout..

If you have access to a DVA (Direct Voltage Adapter) Meter, then test the output of the stator. It should be around the 200-400 volts, between ground (engine block) and the blk/wht, when pulling the cord. The other, less conclusive, method would be to check for continuity with a multimeter. The trigger coil will show a bit higher resistance than the stator. The stator has 2 windings, high speed and low speed. The high speed is blk/yel and the low speed is blk/wht. Check between ground and each of these 2 wires. The trigger has no ground point, so is checked across the wires. (brn/wht and brn/yel)

Chris.............

Hi Chris !!!!
We got the engine running finally, it was
definately the stator causing all this problem, got a new one, installed it and bingo it started
on first pull, so thank's again chris for your time and patience concerning this problem, now the only one left is the honda 50 that i am having problems with the idling, got to figure that one out.. so thank's again and take care, till the next time we talk... Mike in Canada...
chow for now...
