For several months now my 1989 Evinrude 200 VRO is really difficult starting when cold. I pump the bulb, hold in the key for about 5 seconds then crank and hold. I get absolutely no catch. After a while I have to resort to connecting a starting charger. After several more tries, I get my first ignition but no start. This goes on for about five more times before I get a start.

Now recently, along with the scenario above, the starter solenoid disengages at the first sign of a cylinder ignition, making the process even more difficult

Thanks,
Jim

Assuming you have spark on all, the primer is working correctly and the carbs are clean, what plugs are you using? How old is the fuel?

Next time you try it turn the primer on manually and tun it off after it gets running.

Jim,its Normal for the starter solenoid to disengage if it dont start. What Im saying is when you get the other issue fixed, the starter wont do that.I guess you already know this.
