1989 3.0L mercruiser Engine Water Temp Guage

Hi all,

I was running my boat last night and all the gauges seemed to be working fine until I looked down and the engine water temp gauge was all the way up (to the right). The engine certainly did not seem like it was pumping 250-300 degree water and didn't seem to overheat. Any indication on what could cause this or how to diagnose it?
