Yes, don't do it.

Your gonna have trouble with your esa.

If it's running good now, why mess with it.

Re: 1989 3 ltr omc dist replacement

The trouble is I troll alot and after a few hours of trolling one of the centrifugal advance arms (weights ,Im Not sure of the proper word)gets stuck in ther closed position and the timing gets screwed up.This has happened a few times. every time I take it apart and unstick it and it runs good again for a while . Do these get worn and should I just replace them?I wasn't sure if a electronic replacement would eliminate the centrifugal advance or not.

The screw that holds it in place, tight ?

There any play in the shaft ? Try to wiggle it, any play is unacceptable.

check the pin where the weight swivels ,it could be loose, could also be the pin that limits the amount of advance is worn off. this should be fixable. I would put in a pertronics solid state point eliminator kit .you could put in the EST system that is used in the newer versions of this power package

The Pertronix electronic conversion won't get rid of your problem as it only replaces the points, you still have the mechanical weights in the distributor.

When you say that you "unstuck" the weights, how did you do this? Were the weights free to swing on their posts, return springs still tight and not rusted to bits. If I'm not mistaken (which I could be, have been before :D) the weights should have plastic bushings that ride on the posts,,, maybe not .

Sounds like you need to pull off the point plate, inspect the weights and springs, disassemble, clean, lube and reassemble. When you are finished you should be able to pull the weighs out and have them return under the spring pressure, all though the will be a bit loose at rest, hardly takes and pressure to get them moving out from their resting position.

As Chieflan said, check your shaft bushings in the housing, the main shaft should not have any play,,, well very little. If it's enough to be felt while rocking the end of the shaft back and forth (where the rotor sits) the bushings in the housing are most likely shot. Been there done that, timing was all over the place and very difficult to get the engine to idle properly.

easiest way is to convert it to the Delco EST, merc used it and volvo used it on the 3.0 for many years as well as a few other marinizers.
it can be eaily wired for your shift cutout and will actually eliminate the problematic ESA,.
couple that with NO mechanical advance and a dry coil and its a vast improvement over points.
its very simple to rewire the shift cut on the OMC to the setup that mercruiser used for years and years.

Dan you described it a lot better than me.

Doing it and describing how to do it is a lot different.

Thanks for all the input When the one side gets stuck it is in the closed position,I imagine the posts are worn enough to cause this ,It's a used boat and I don't know how many hours are on it.As far as the conversion to est?(not sure what that stands for).I'm guessing electronic ignition.Do they sell the whole dist assembly or just the guts?Seems like the way to go as they need less service than points! Thanks again for the input,I love this website!!!
