1989 4 cyl AQ131C with 275 drive; wont pick up water from ears

i have a recirculating cooling system on this 4 banger. a new raw water impellar was installed which sends water to cool the exhaust. when i put ears on it, the water doesnt make it to the motor. when it sits in a deep bucket, the water makes it to the motor. any ideas?

On the bottom of the drive is a 1/2in drain hole.
Is it plugged?

no sir not plugged. in fact the water comes out of there in spades when im trying to use the ears

could it be a break in a line or hose from the boot to the pump, in-that its losing vacuum pull?

That drain hole needs to be plugged when using the ears.

I mean, there could be problems in the plumbing upstream of the ears inside the drive and on thru the transom up to the pump. But that drainhole needs to be plugged while using the ears.

I have an AQ125B with the 270 outdrive which is very similar.
I gave up on getting the muffs to work properly on this drive. Even with the hole plugged I just cannot get the muffs to sit properly. Anything above idle and the engine will heat up.
I now just use the bottom half of a 55 gal plastic drum when I need to test it out of the water.
With a slow stream of water from a garden hose I can run the engine up to high RPM to perform all the testing and adjusting I need.

Close off the hole in the bottom and use these. I got mine at Walmart.

I use duct tape to seal the edges.
Needs to be dry to make it seal right.

I'd go nuts worrying about tape every time. The rectangular cups work well. Also note I tapped the hole in the bottom of the leg and use a homemade 1/2" T bolt to plug it. I get water out the exhaust about 2 seconds after she lights up.

I cheated on the water inlet of mine. I put an automotive cooling system flush kit "t" close to the pump suction and hook the garden hose to that. When using that method, there's no doubt that you're bypassing any testing of the upstream components, but I do those tests pre-season.

I like the tape as it keeps the muffs in place.
You ever have the muffs fall off and burn up the impeller.
The way the front of the Volvo lower unit is shaped, it can fall off easy.
The spout from a tube of silicone makes a great plug for the 1/2in hole.

thanks guys I will try your suggestions and hope for the best on this baby. Any ideas on where I can get a drive motor trim pump? I checked on ebay and amazon but I am weary of buying one that I can physically see

There is no trim pump on that outdrive. Are you refering to the tilt mechanism motor? Or the entire tilt machanism???

the trim/tilt motor that was on there is no good. motor burned out and to repair it is $275 the guy at the electric motor shop said he couldnt gaurantee it would work anyway. i have been looking for another one, but i dont know which one to get and where. i bought the boat a year ago and have been restoring it. first the motor and drive were checked, then the floor was professionallly replaced. now i need to comp,ete the job by getting the tilt motor and exhaust manifold fixed

Volvo-Penta Power Tilt and Trim Motors

I bought one of these a few years back. Cross reference the part number on your old motor to one of these. FYI, the tilt mechanism on the 275 outdrive is not meant for power tilt. They are only for raising the drive for hauling out and launching the boat. You can tilt it up in shallow water but only about half way and only at idle speed. For towing get yourself a towing bracket. I bought one of these, works nicely.
