1989 40 hp tracker

I have an 89 40 hp long shaft evinrude tracker that is remote. I found a steal of a deal on a 25 mercury that is a tiller....my question is, can I keep my controls and change over the merc to a remote and just remove the handle? The guy with the Merc. said he thinks I can but just wanted to see if anyone on here could point me in the right direction. (and I need a 25 for restricted lakes around me, the 40 is shot)

I think the cable ends are different between the evinrude and the merc.
Take a look in the marine store and look up cables and ends for each one and see.
