I recently boat a 1989 40hp Mariner. It is a two cylinder. It is very sluggish out of the hole. I did not pay much for this engine. Does anybody know if It is a good engine?

Hi Nathan!
The engine is a good one if the compression is good.
Tell us more about it, top rpm's, propeller pitch.
The boat, length, weight to start with. Then I think you'll get some good answers.

:)

for around $19 you an get a compression gauge that screws into cylinder.... it will give these guys something to start with. all major auto parts stores carry them (that price is for autozone where i am from. Good luck

The boat is on a 15 foot creek boat. I am turning a 15" prop. It has 130lbs psi on both cylinders. Sombody told me the throttle cable could be stretched? When planed off it will probably run 35 mph.

15" prop! I have a 1995 Mercury 40hp (4cyl) and have a 10-3/8" dia, 13 pitch prop and it works fine on my 16' Lund. I did try a 15" pitch prop and it was very sluggish out of the hole. Try going down to a 12" or 13" pitch.

Tom
