1989 4LF Manual Start Spring and Lower Unit?

I broke the pull rope and in trying to fix it the spring can out and I can't get it back in. Is there a technique or trick to doing this. Also I have to change the impeller. How do you remove the lower unit to do this. Captain Mike Marcelle..
