I have a 1989 7.4L Bravo and I am thinking of replacing the merc stern drive. It pushes a Cruiser Holiday 2570 and weighs 5300 lbs. dry. What would be the best drive for this boat?

Your ONLY choice is another Bravo. Otherwise you have to change the complete transom assembly, along with a lot of other stuff.
Now you do have a choice between a Bravo II or III. But that's about it.

I'm somewhat new to this. Read where the 1.36 gear ratio is better than the 1.5. What would you recomend Bravo I or Bravo II?

You want a gear ratio for your particular engine, that's it for gear ratio. Except it may change for altitude. But that's it.
What exactly are you trying to do?

Your boat will not be a good fit for a Bravo 1 with a 1.36 ratio. It would require you to put on a 15 pitch prop or smaller,a nd that's not good.

DonS recommended a Bravo 2 or a Bravo 3. Not a Bravo 1. The Bravo 2 would have a LARGE diamter prop (specific to that drive only and they cost over $500 for new aluminums) that allows it push huge quantities of water that will help get your big ol heavy boat up on plane.
A Bravo 3 has two counter rotating propellers ($1300 for a set new, stainless steel only) that provide 6 blades of surface area, give great lift, and help a big ol heavy boatr like your plane faster. they also allow for better steering in reverse.

Bravo 2s are getting very rare, especially on new boats, as the Bravo 3 does everything it does (maybe better), and more.

Bravo 2s and Bravo 3s are most commonly 2.0 rations, but can be had in 1.81 and 2.2 pretty easily.

What are you trying to do exactly, and where are you located?
