Well after having the block completely rebuilt and have ran it through the break in period I have a problem. All was good till the last time I was out and the motor seemed to stall out on me. Almost like it was out of gas. So I throttled back and killed the engine. I check the tank and could see there was about a gallon left in the bottom of the 19 gallon fuel cell so I thought maybe the pick up wasn't all the way in the bottom of the tank so it was starved for fuel. I loaded the boat and left. The next time I took it out with a full tank of gas it would turn over but never crank. I don't have a kill switch wired up so I know it isn't that. So I took it home and checked fuel lines, filters, and pump. Everything seemed to be working so that is when I checked the plugs. Plugs looked good as they were brand new and I checked the coils with an ohm meter and they showed to be good. After reading on here it must be the power pack because it would be real bad luck to have all three coils go out. Well this past weekend I put the brand new omc power pack on and still no spark. I was told to check all wires and battery cables. I rewired the ignition switch with a new power harness. Put new battery cables and cleaned up any nicked wire on the block as well as organize the wires in looms. After all that still no spark. I am lost now as to what it could be. Stator? Slow Starter? Something completely simple? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 1989 70 Evinrude has no spark

Well after scouring the web for hours, days I came across some more ways to test the electrical system. I came to the conclusion that the next part that could be bad was that the startor. I done a few different test with my multimeter and think that has to be the culprit. I will get it put on next week in it comes in and see if that does the trick. Until then I might get a new starting battery. I got mine tested last week at an auto parts store and they said it was good, but it is at least 4 years old. Besides some of those kids that work there probably aren't the brightest, or knowledgable. I will let yall know. Thanks.

Yep that is what I found to do some more diagnostic work. Just hope I did it right. Hell if this stator doesn't fix the problem it won't take but a couple hundred more hard earned dollars and I will have completely rebuilt the electrical system on this block. Well except for the starter. Just hope my stator gets here by Monday or Tuesday so that I can have it running for next weekend.

Re: 1989 70 Evinrude Has a slow start

Just got the new stator installed and the motor cranking but now I have a new question. The starter when I first turn the key acts like it doesn't want to crank over but eventually does. I am just wondering if it is the starter or the battery. I have gotten the batteries tested and both were 100% charged and putting out over 12 volts. I just checked one more time and with the nav lights and radio on it showed 12.68 volts. I am going to go to interstate battery to test my batteris one more time, thinking they would be pros, and then decide if I need new ones. Along with that if it is the starter should I rebuild mine or buy brand new? I am just trying to do right but at the same time not spend any more money then I already have. I appreciate all input. Thanks

I checked the coils with an ohm meter and they showed to be good.

,.....i checked my coils w/ an ohmeter and showed good ( same results on 4 different coils set of old and set of new ) . one was BAD as i swapped it out on the opposite cylinder of my 40hp . a few ohms between black and green . 5k between plug and either of the other 2 . how exactly did you check yours ?

Re: 1989 70 Evinrude has no spark

I followed my OEM repair manual. If I recall correctly I checked the ohms by putting the red lead on the coil post coming from the power pack, and then the black lead on the coil post going to the spark plug. All 3 coils showed to be good, and within the ohm range provided by my manual. Plus the fact that I was not getting any spark on all 3 cylinders at once was a pretty good sign it wasn't my coils, as the odds of all 3 failing at once would be extremely unlucky.

what reading did you get in ohms between the plug wire and power pack ?
