My bearing housing has a chip out of it and leaks, repair manual calls for 397188 part. Is there others that will fit this motor? Or can this be repaired?

you can fit a 1977 model no 70773s 70hp bearing housing & there are a few other models from that year onwards that will fit . the only difference is that you just wont have the anode on those models

Thanx that is what I needed to know, found a couple used and new but was unsure of the fit. Thought i would be good from 1977 to 2006?

Will do.. Checked out your Epoxy method, looks good. While inspecting as I was taking the pic I noticed it looked like it was leaking around the 0330137 seals. The outer seal is installed with the spring side out, is the correct.

the springs in the seal is there to keep it firmly on the shaft go to da seal shop & they can fit a slightly smaller spring for you , witch ive done before , if i can remember there are 2 seals on the prop side just after the bearing i would put the springs side in facing the gearbox , put x2 new seals

exactly where is the leak u need to upload a photo so i can see what you on about k from my understanding reading about it sounds like it leaking between the seal & housing correct me if i am wrong if that's the case u need to take the gearbox apart to fix it .if it leaking between the seal & shaft different story den put x2 new seals , before you do anything u need to find out whether they are the correct seals that are in there at the moment ,because some clown has probably put the wrong seals in , you will never know ,unless you have owned the motor all its life ,if not you have to take them out anyway cause its leaking k , then while they out make sure they are the correct ones & at the same time look for cracks etc , & examine the face of the housing where the seal fits .look for pitted marks caused by corrosion , tell me what you find then we cross the bridge from there k , cheers

The springs are back to back. Inner one goes with spring in (to keep oil in). Outer one goes with spring out ( to keep water out). Unless it's some certain Yamaha models.
