We are having a problem with our 1989 Force Outboard Motor. We recently went out on the lake and everything was fine for awhile. We went to take off and the motor completely stalled. Every time we tried to gas it – it choked. We could finally get it to move but it crept the whole time but only if we gave it very little gas. We also had to pump the bulb every few minutes. We have checked the plugs and carb – fine, did a compression check – fine, took the fuel pump apart which seems fine as well. Sounds wonderful when it is out of the water, even with throttle all the way up – runs perfect. But the minute we put it in the water and throttle up it dies. Any suggestions or help you could give would be great. Help!

You should not have to pump the bulb after it is primed. I would start there make sure your bulb is good. Since you looked at the fuel pump already i would suspect air is getting in the fuel line somewhere. That is if you find the bulb is good.

The reason we pumped the bulb was to see if it had to do with fuel?? Just grabbing at straws at that point. Didn't seem to be the problem. Now we are just dumbfounded and have no clue as to our next move...

Re: 1989 85HP Force - Help

I too have an 85hp Force (1988) and I have experienced a very similar problem. Mainly the problem I have been having is a lack of power on the water. The engine runs fine at the dock with only some very slight hiccups every once in a while. but once out on the lake as the boat starts to plane-off it boggs down. the only thing that seems to help is if someone squeezes the bulb, which causes the boat to take off. I have done just about everything; replaced fuel pump, checked and replaced just about every hose, added carb cleaner to the gas, sprayed carbs...etc... I did however read something on a web site about making sure that the battery cables are good and free of breaks and/or corrosion. It apparently has something to do with the CDI ignition. here's the web site... I've tried to locate the exact article, but seem to be missing somehow.
http://www.outboardparts.com/troubleshooting

Happy Boating (when Your O/B is working right) :p
