I have had this motor for about the last 13 yrs and have rebuilt it once 8 yrs ago with no issues. in just the last year i noticed when I pull out the shift lever to the neutral position and push forward my high idle has gotten lower and lower to the point that it is very difficult to start. I do manage to get it running but know that this starting procedure is hard on other componentss. could this problem be in the shift lever control box? or is it most likly a fuel linkage adjustment. The salmon are in the river and I need to get this fixed fast. After getting it started and running for 3 min. I dont have a problem the rest of the day.
Thanks JJ

If you are able to then take the top cowl cover of and visually notice if both carbs are opening together while your moving throttle forward or reverse should give the same results. If so then it may be time for the link and sink sticky posted by frank at the beginning of this forum. Takes some time really isn't hard to do. You may also want to check the throttle cable and make sure it is mounted properly in place and moves the tower shaft as you engage the throttle. What rpms are you getting at wot. Should be 4500-5500 at full throttle while in gear and on the water.

The carbs barely move in the fast idle position...the timing is highly advanced.... Make sure your choke is working. Start by greasing your trigger and lubricating all of your moving parts and linkages...mainly the trigger. If the cable isnt broken or hasnt been adjusted then it should be fine. Checked for cracked plastic timing linkages. Your engine should start after about 5 seconds of continious choking and cranking.

I dont understand what part whould be the trigger? I do have chock issues. I have to hold it open manually and that still dosent allow the motor to start properly. The chocke plunger seams to move freely enough but wont work unless I have my battery charger hooked up. The battery is not weak by any means. I am confused, JJ

Trigger or timer base.Is under the stator.Any rust or buildup of grung will stop it from moving right.
The way to test is have someone push the shifter all the way forward. It should make the linkage travel as far as it will go.Look at it as your buddy shifts.
First thread in the Force section is a linc and sinc from FrankA.Do that and it should tune-up your linkage.
Choke, the plunger, spray with WD or any spray cleaner as you try to cycle it.
If it still won't work with the key then the key switch might be bad.WD in the switch.
Use a test light to see if it's working right.
Sometimes they won't work cause the old lube got sticky.J
