Being that my engine is now 20 years old,I now regularly check the temperature alarm by grounding the brown wire to the switch in the head. Unfortunately, that does not check the switch. Does anyone know how reliable that switch is,and do you have to remove the head to get to it?

the are reliable, and yes you have to remove the head. changing the tstats would be a good move. great motor.

Technically you don't have to remove each head, only the outer water jacket cover.
