Does anybody know what temperature the cylinder head should be when the
engine is 1-at idle in neutral
2-in gear at slow speed(1500)
3-in gear at 3500 or more?

Don't know about 1,2,&3 as it depends on the overall health of your engines waterpump, tstats, water jackets etc...But any temp over 163 degrees F at any engine speed or load is cause for concern.

At idle, the thermostat opens at 143. The cylinder head should be at that temp, or slightly higher, perhaps 150 or 155. It is hard to say exactly what temp will be when running the boat at planing speed speed. When at speed in the water, the pressure relief valves will open, bypassing the thermstats. A flood of cooling water will circulate through the powerhead, cooling it generally to a temp lower than thermostat temps. Depending on the lake water temps, it could go down below lowest gauge (100) reading temps in the early spring when the lake is 40, and higher in the summer (125-135) when the lake is 75-80. FYI, the hot horn should go off at 212.

Your local dealer should be able to supply you with a 163 degree meltstik that can be used for monitoring your engines head and block temp.
