I am a newbie to i-boats.com. I just purchase a 1989 17 ft. Bayline Capri and i'm going to restore the flooring. I started this past weekend, and boy is it gonna be fun. I need some advise and expertise on what are the best materials do get the job done. Let's start with plywood. I know marine would be the best to use, but my budget will not allow it. I've check at Lowes and they carry both an exterior grade BX & treated. Would either work well if I was to cover the underside with and expoxy or a water sealer? What should I use to cover the topside. I've seen Bondo makes something called Bondo-Hair. It comes in qts & gallons. Should I use fiberglass mats & resins? I have had to take out all of the flotation from under the floor as well from under the seat bases. I've seen on a web site a 2 part mixture, but I've also seen at Lowes a 20# tank with spray nozzle that shoots a foam mixture like they insulate walls with. I can get this done, but I need all the help I can get and the best way to do it. If anyone has done a similar project like and has pics. Please send!!

Re: 1989 bayliner capri restoration

Hello, and welcome to iboats...
If you search for deck replacement in this forum you will find more reading material than you can stand.

I have an '87 Bayliner capri cuddy cabin that I am at the tail end of a partial restore on. Exterior grade plywood is fine to use on the deck. There are alot of conflicting opinions on here and abroad about how to go about sealing the ply and what to use. Some people just coat with resin some people use CSM some people use a polyuerathane some paint. I am sure others more knowledgeable than I will chime in.

I used bondo hair to bed my stringer in with but I would not use it to cover the entire deck.

I am going to use a two part pour foam in my hull as I don't think the spray in stuff is waterproof like the two part foam is supposed to be. as like above there are differing opinions on this subject as well. Some don't put flotation back in at all. Some use pool noodles. some use the pink or blue stuff from Home depot or Lowes. some use 2 liter pop bottles. Seeing that you have a bayliner I would do the two part pour foam as it adds a little ridgidity to the hull.

Please see my sig for pics on my thread. I have other pics as well if you would like I can post them for you.

yep......welcome to iboats....

first off .....read read read......you need a boatucation, and you are in the correct place.

if you are doing this boat on a budget and cannot afford the marine grade ply......then scrap the epoxy and go poly....cost is less than half and you will never benifet from the epoxy.

but the choice is yours.....read here first.....

we are here to help you ....and we will

cheers
