Hello everyone and thanks in advance. I am a relatively new owner of a 1989 Bayliner Capri 2.3 with an OMC Cobra outdrive. The electrical problem I have appeared to be a bad solenoid. When I turn the key to on the dash lights and radio work. Navigation lights and horn are also functioning. When I attempt to start the boat the solenoid clicks rapidly. I have replaced the solenoid 3 times none of which have solved the problem. Also I have no blower motor and I cannot raise the trim. There is fully charged battery, and the cable from the battery to the solenoid and solenoid to starter have all been replaced. The starter has been tested and appears to be normal. I have traced the wiring to the trim motor. There is 12V all the way to the pump, but when I turn the key the voltage drops to 0. When I test the voltage across the solenoid ther are 12V going to the battery side of the solenoid but it is 0 with the key in all positions on the starter side and at the S terminal. Any ideas? Is there a difference between a marine solenoid other than they are sealed (which I have just (learned recently) and an automotive solenoid? A bad solenoid does not explain the blower motor and trim.

Thanks again

Re: 1989 Bayliner electrical problem

welcome to iboats

voltage drop on 12v is as simple as a dirty connection. The solinoid click as all power trys to go to the starter so voltage drops and solinoid opens then repeats so you get a clicking. Something is making a poor connection. battery should be 12.6v when charged put the volt meter on the battery then try the trim or starter if the battery drops below 10v then the battery is bad (might be better to take to autoparts store so they can load test). If the battery voltage does not drop then clean every connection including all the ground cables. you might have to sand some connections to make them shinny especially on the battery and ground points.
