I Have A 1989 135 Oil Injected Black Max. I F I Do Much Idling The Motor Smokes Badly And Tries To Load Up. Could The Injector Be Putting Too Much Oil In The Gas? This Is The First Oil Injected Motor Ive Ever Owned. The Motor Has Excellent Compression.

Re: 1989 Black Max Oil Injector

There is a linkage adjustment for the oil pump in the maintenance manual. It swings with the throttle linkage.

The mark on the oil injection arm is supposed to line up with the mark on the oil pump casting with the throttle at idle, engine off.

With most 2 cycle oils, it will tend to smoke a little on takeoff. I use PenZoil full synthetic, and it smokes considerably less.

hope it helps

Kahuna, You might check the fuel pump diaghram. if it leaks, raw fuel will get into the crankcase and smoke like crazy...

I second that. A flooded carb, ie a bad needle or sunk float will do the same.

So can a stuck fuel enricher valve.

On the fuel pump, there's a hose that goes from the pump to the crankcase, (probably fitting on the reed plate). It should be dry inside. If it's wet, it's fuel pump kit time.

Most consider a fuel pump kit an anual maintenance item anyway.

The oiler usually either works or it don't. Alarms go off if it quits.

hope it helps

My 1986 150 hp did that and it ended up being a bad spark, the stator went bad.

Re: 1989 Black Max Oil Injector

I have a problem when idling also. Motor is 150 black max xr4, not sure of the year. I think its a late 80's model. The bottom carb starts flooding fuel out the front of it, engine starts smoking real bad "loading up" or flooding out and will eventually die. Once i throttle up and run, it all clears up and runs like normal. I premix my fuel/oil. I had the carbs rebuilt and it idled fine the first 45min or so after that then back to same ole problem. I thought the carb rebuild would fix the problem. Any ideas?

I PUT A KIT IN THE FUEL PUMP AND THE OLD DIAPHRAMS LOOKED FINE, NO HOLES. HOPE ITS NOT THE CARBS. IT DOES FINE ANYWHERE ABOVE AN IDLE, STILL SMOKES A LITTLE EVEN FULL THROTTLE. ONE GUY SAID IT COULD BE A SPARK PLUG. IT DOES RUN A LITTLE ROUGH, NOT A FULL MISS THOUGH. YOU COULD SAY IT RUNS LIKE A 10 CYLINDER MOTOR WITH ONE PLUG WIRE OFF.

Re: 1989 Black Max Oil Injector

Sorry for being late but I just came acrossed it now so here we go. I have a 1989 150hp Merc BlackMax XR4 and had the same rough idling or couldn't keep an idle and dying(plus plugs fouling). First I thought fuel lines and/or bulb mabey oil lines and/or pump. So I decided to clean carbs before I get the lines to mabey do a process of elimination and found that my Idle jet sizes were off. I asked a local Mercury dealer and the guy found that they were all wrong ( even on my High speed jet's too). The Idles were .052 on top carb & middle / bottom were .054. They should be .074. After that no more fouling of plugs / Bad smoking / Hold's idle( better gas milage on the troll now).I haven't messed with the high speed's yet but Merc dude said they weren't off as bad as the idle's, that it shoudn't make a diffrence.Though sometimes the boat feels like it wants to slip out from underneath me & it makes me wonder :D. So I know this isn't a magic bullet but I seen the year was the same and a Mercury so hope it helps.

PS: CaptDrew what are you running the XR4 on and how is it running? Plus When I first got this rig when I repaired the XR4 I asked some one about running pre mixed and Using the oil injection. Basiclly to me it sounded like they both the same, it's just where you wanna do the maintance. With the oil injection, upkeep on the oil pump / Filter / sensors (if running Warning horn) is vital. Pre Mixed is more a controlled way plus theres no way for the oil pump, lines, ect to go wrong But on the flip, the carbs will 'gunk' up quicker & req. light cleaning or full clean. Though Iv'e heard around if your racing it to mix I think because of high RPM's I dunno. Mabey the idle jets might help you aswell.

Re: 1989 Black Max Oil Injector

I'd suggest you look up the carb jetting and stock carburetor for your motor. Somebody may have changed something. Some try 200 HP carbs on the 150 motor. About all it does is wreck the idle. There's about 40 different WH series carbs. They all look the same, except about 3 different size bores. Setup on them is all over the board. It's a murkery myster to us all. If you have the stock carbs and they have the listed stock jets in them, they should run adequately.

Main Jet, bigger is more gas, richer
Idle Jet, bigger is more air, leaner
Carb vent jet, I forget, but it affects midrange.

Mains affect idle. So usually if you mess with the mains, you have to mess with the idle jets also.

There's a fine line between running at peak, and toasting a piston. Stock jetting is somewhat rich from that line.

hope it helps
