1989 Capri L drive steering problems

I am having trouble with by 1989 Bayliner capri 1770 85hp L drive. While sitting still, I am able to turn the steering wheel with ease, but while engaged in gear, going any faster than a trolling speed, the steering begins to seize up. When you goose it from a stand still, you cannot move the steering wheel at all until you get up to plane and even then it is not as easy as I think it should be. On the other hand when you put it in reverse, it turns even easier than when the boat is at a stand still. I have greased the shaft to which the cable attaches and also main shaft coming from the drive unit. Can anyone tell me if you have had/heard about similar issues about this before, and what was done to correct it.

I don't know what it pivots on but that hinge/bearing probably needs grease or replacement.The Ldrive folks may be along with some ideas.If you think it's worth the $39 get yourself a manual.

I have an L-drive. Here's my idea.

Take it out to the middle of the lake, pull the plug, and swim back. (As you may or may not be able to tell, I'm a little disgusted with the L-drive....)

I'm gonna run out to mine, and see if there's a grease zerk or something on the L-drive. I looked in the Seloc manual... doesn't show this at all. I ordered my Clymer's on Saturday.... Hopefully it's here soon.

Have you played with the exhaust flange deally (the technical term)? I don't believe this would be the problem, but it's supposed to help counter the torque-steer of the prop.....

Clymers manual for Force Outboards 198? - 1999 (Includes L-drives)

This is what it says right on the cover. Froogle 'Clymer repair Force', and see what you come up with.

Hopefully mine shows up soon (should be within a day or two). If it does, I'd be happy to look up the page that you need....

I'm guessing someone else has it, and they'd be willing to do the same????
