1989?? Evenrude,won't run unless it's at high speed.

About a 1990 9.9 Evinrude.
Starts and runs only if the choke is used.
Push it back in it stalls.
Will start right back up but won't stay running.
Will run as long as you choke it.
New impeller.
New fuel pump.
Cleaned carb(maybe should do it again).
New gas/oil.
What's the initial setting for air screw?(saw the post by Tashas daddy)Just making sure.

There is a little tube in the bowel that supplies fuel to the idle circut, is it clogged or does it have a hole in it?
Is the orifice in the nozzel well clean and not restricted?

I cleaned carb.Thought everything was good.
Actually ran good two days ago.
I changed impeller and started it before returning to the owner and it ran like CRAP!!
Will clean the carb again(wed) going to Sea World tomorrow!!

Daviet has it. Tube extending down into the bowl is probably clogged, even tho you say you cleaned the carb.

Everyone misses the tubes....sigh.......

did you re-kit the carb or just blow it out? im working on a 1985 6hp that has the same symptoms, replaced the fuel lines under the cowl and it went from only running with the choke open to running well after feathering the choke for a minute or two. ( fuel lines were basically petrified and leaking at the carb).

Just went through the carb again.No dirt or cloggs.
Jets open and no crud.
Starts right up and then will slowly die.
Pumping fuel(new rebuild)

Checked the tube and its not clogged or cracked.
Initial air screw setting 1 and a 1/2 turn out.
Newer gas(second tank)brand new tank,gas,oil. new today!!!

Gonna go and take it off again!!!

If it has a welch plug near the motor flange inline with the idle screw and you have not removed it a cleaned the small holes out under it, could be your trouble. I've had to do it on several motors that someone else has done and didn't run right. The holes are very small and its the only way to get to them.

Ok.It's an 89 9.9
It's carb doesn't have any welch plugs.
Don't see any cracks.
The tube is clean/clear.The rest of the carb is perfect.
The rubber gasket in the bottom looks like it's been there a while so I turned it over.
The motor runs great but still won't idle???
I've set the air screw out 1 and 1/2 turns. This enough??
