My Evinrude 110 accelerates OK sometimes, meaing it will get up on plane and reach it's top speed of 45 mph at around 5000 rpms. The tachometer works when it feels like the engine is firing on all 4 cylinders. More often though (especially lately) I'm unable to get full acceleartion and performance, but the wierd thing is the tachometer doesn't work when it acts sluggish. It doesn't seem like the two issues should be related, but it has been apparent that it runs well when the tachometer is working and when the outboard isn't performing 110% the tachometer doesn't work/register rpms.

Can someone give me some advice?

Any help is welcome. Thanks for your time. I'm new to outboard and bass boat ownership and have had fun learning the ins and outs.

tach check connections corrision, bad rectifier,

on the motor do a compression and spark check to determine a base line. when were the carbs last cleaned and rebuilt. last linc n sinc. if all is good, and it still does not run correctly, check spark immediately when it is acting bad.

Re: 1989 Evinrude 110 Acceleration & Tach Help

I ended up taking the boat in to AJ Marine here in Yakima and got some expert advise. My 1st and 3rd cylinders aren't operating at 100% and did not pass a compression test. There's visible nicks and scrapes within the cylinder. It sounds like I need to overhaul the engine. I'm weighing my options as it's an expensive proposition. Any thoughts, please send them my way?
