I have no experience with a motor this big. Need your help. Took a look at a boat with this motor on it. Based on what I know it has recently had the carbs replaced or re-built. That's all I know at this time. When I learn more about it's history I'll add it to this post.
I would like to hear some opinions on this motor.
Thanks.

Old and proven technology. It wont make the torque that a looper will but it is a very good design.

I've got 3 V6 crossflows myself.

Good luck!

Dhadley, thanks for the response... Torque? is that in relation to speed/hole shot? Overall power vs. what? For instance, a Merc. 150, Johnson etc...

Engines produce two measures of power. Horsepower and torque. Horsepower is to impress your neighbor. Torque is what does the work.

Comparing the same brand (OMC in your case) the 150 crossflow you have makes 150 hp, + or - the given % as set forth by the NMMA. A 150 looper (OMC) will still produce 150 hp, + or - the %, but makes more torque.

Regardless, yours is a fine motor and should give you years of service.

Good luck!

Re: 1989 Evinrude 150 V6

I learned a little bit more about the work done on the motor tonight..

The owner says that the carbs were rebuilt, the intake valves were replaced (possible bad news), the fuel filters were taken out and replaced with cleanable screens (I assume in the tanks or intake lines, I'll learn more about that), and also that the oil pump/intake was taken out in order to go with a straight mix out of the tank... I've heard of this being a better method in regards to consistent mix ratio at various RPM's, so that doesn't bother me... Curious to know if that effects the motor performance? He has a 3 bladed stainless prop on it at this time.

I think this boat has been mainly stored outside which may be the reason for the carb problem, or is this somewhat common with even well taken care of engines of this type?
Sorry for the long and repeated concerns, but I need a tournament (yea right!) class boat quick and I don't want to jump into a mistake... I'll check the boat out the best I can. But this motor is the key IMO.
Thanks again.

There are NO intake or exhaust valves on the V6. Its a 2 stroke. Two stroke engines have reeds which serve the same purpose. If the seller said he replaced the intake valves, I would RUN, not walk, away from this deal. If they were actually replaced then he would know what to call them. If he lied about this then you dont know what else he might be hiding.

The reeds are the "intake valves" on that motor. Did he mention "Boeysen"?

Ask some follow-up questions about why he changed the "intake valves" but dont mention Boeysen reeds. See if he does. They are a very good standard performance upgrade. If he isnt clear on why they were changed I would, as John C. Fox is, be leary.

Have we checked compression or looked at the gear oil? The compression should not vary more than 15 lbs between high and low. The gear oil should not be contaminated with water or metal.

Good luck!

Great info guys....

Dhadley, what is the proper compression we should see on this motor?

An exact number would depend on the gauge, which heads he has, which gaskets hes using etc.

The big thing on a 2 stroke is the difference between high and low. No more than 15 lbs. Not a % but 15 lbs.

Good luck!
