Considering purchasing a boat with this motor and looking for information as to the performance and reliability

1) Is this motor a looper?
2) Is it considered fuel efficient?
3) What are the common problems with this motor?

Thanks in advance

Re: 1989 Evinrude 150 XP

1) This motor is a cross flow.

2) Nope, I had a 1987 150XP and it would pass everything but a gas station. Power to spare as it would go toe to toe with any 175 out there and even some 200's

3) Electrical, the 35 amp charging systems creates alot of heat. My 150 worked flawlessly for 19 years then replace a Stator, Rectifier and Power Packs and back to normal. Hated to let mine go but upgraded to a 2000 150 60 degree looper. As Dhadley would say went from OLD CHUGGER to ZINGER.

Re: 1989 Evinrude 150 XP

they get worse gas milage than a looper
and a looper will outrun one .
but the crossflows are durable and fairly reliable
if there is such a thing in and outboard ,
proper maintenence is critical ,water pump carbs/ lower unit oil
decarb and on and on ,check the compression there is a thread in faqs on checking out a boat and outboard ,i have had five crossflows
liked all of them but havent been able to go looper
but will soon build me and older looper
good luck

Thanks Gents. What years are loopers and/or how do you tell a looper from a crossflow?

Re: 1989 Evinrude 150 XP

The XP/GT models were the high performance bass engines of their time. They had special features not found on the normal 150's. They put out 10 percent more hp than 150, around 165. To do that they had some of the 175 components, carbs heads. They have stiff lower engine mounts for better steering at high speeds. Also, special decals and louvered cowlings for better breathing. Most of them have the high capacity 35 amp alternators. They have good torque out of the hole and pull strongly up to 5850, the normal rev limit. I'd do a compression check and run it before purchase.

What is a good compression for this engine?

I'd be looking for 95 on each hole. It depends the heads.

Did you trade/upgrade just the motor, or your entire setup?
