1989 Evinrude 25 hp starting problems

we purchased a boat which came with a 1989 25 hp Evinrude motor. We have the gas to oil ratio as 50:1. It has a choke on the front we are not sure how to use in what position. We are having trouble getting it started. Can anyone give some initial things to try.

Welcome to iboats.

First, pump the primer bulb on the fuel line until it is firm.

Then close the choke. Hit the starter. As soon as the engine fires reduce the choke to half way and adjust it as necessary to keep the engine running until it smooths out. Open the choke.
